Rafter (Stargate)
The rafters result from the Univers of fiction of Stargate.
The rafters are the symbols which appear with the periphery of the Porte of the Stars. Each rafter represents a star constellation. Dr. Daniel Jackson includes/understands of it the principle in the film Stargate.
Explanations of the rafters
The rafters are useful in fact to define a point in a space in 3 dimensions, it is necessary 6 points in order to be able to locate the point of arrival in this space. But it is not all, one needs also the point of origin. This is why one is needed 7th point to define this origin, i.e. the door which will start the vortex.
One 8th rafter can be used to change galaxy into acting as a kind of code of zone (the address always ends in the point of origin), but in this case one needs an additional contribution in energy.
The role of the 9th rafter is for the unknown moment, but according to Peter DeLuise it could be used to travel in time or parallel realities. According to Robert C. Cooper, the third series of the Stargate frankness, Stargate Universe, will turn around the concept of this ninth rafter.
