Racket

The racket is an instrument used to practice certain sports: Tennis, Table tennis, Badminton and Squash. It is composed of a handle which makes it possible to hold it in hand, and of a widened part which is used to strike a Balle.

The word comes from the Arab rāhat (palm of the hand).

Origins

The first rackets were used in the Années 1500 to allow noble which played Jeu of palm not to be wounded with the hands. Our current “head” was directly attached to the hand.

Specification

A racket is composed of three parts:

  • the part being used to strike:
    • with tennis, badminton and squash, the Tête of racket is composed of a framework which comes to surround the rope and which is connected to the handle, and of a rope composed of titanium or nylon wire (in competition);
    • with the table tennis, this part is out of wood full and is covered with a stuck rubber carpet.
  • the handle which attaches the grip to the head.
  • the handle of the racket, or Grip .

According to the sports, the size of the head, handle and grip can vary as well as the weight and the solidity of the rope. The racket has sometimes also a bumper located at the end of the head to protect it from possible blows.
