History
Beginnings of the club (1906-1918)
The club is born in 1906 under the name of FC Neudorf. It is about a team of the school of the street of Erstein, whose pupils are impassioned players. They do not hesitate besides to constitute a true club. In order to confirm this foundation, the players make a point of disputing an “official” match. Vis-a-vis the club close to the FC Germania, the kids of Neudorf are made roll 7-0 in one half-time… and give up disputing the second period. A little later a new meeting opposing the two teams, this time in 90 minutes, shows a short defeat of the FCN, 2-0. Equip kids chaperonnés by their teacher Mr. Rohmer, the FC Neudorf receives the reinforcement, in 1909, of Mr. Li who inherits the presidential armchair. It is quickly dislocated of its functions. However, the club is allowed to dispute the competitions of the Regional League. In 1912, Neudorf removes the title of the third division of Oberrhein league. In 1914, the club puts the hand on a true stage by expelling the FC Franconia of the ground of the garden Haemmerlé (future Meinau) at the end of a lawsuit! The FC Neudorf has just reached in the first division of league, but the war stops Net its progression.
Racing amateur (1919-1933)
At the conclusion of the Great War, after having joined the French territory, the club becomes Racing Club of Strasbourg-Neudorf then Racing Club of Strasbourg. It is the new president, Charles Belling (ex-kid of Neudorf and secretary of the FCN since 1909), successor of Louis Becker, who initiates his modifications. The first platform, built out of wood, starts to fill to applaud Racing starting from 1921 and it is necessary to wait five years only to see Racing gaining its first claim to fame, that of Champion of Alsace.
Professional beginnings (1933-1939)
On Saturday, June 10, 1933, at the restaurant of the Stock Exchange, Racing makes the great jump in professionalism thanks to an Extraordinary general assembly which ratifies the adhesion of Racing. A few months later, one attends the first rise in D1 after four matches of stopping against Mulhouse (0/0 and 3/1) and against Saint-Etienne (2/0 and 4/4).All starts well for Racing which settles immediately in the heights of the championship, it finishes 2nd into 34/35, 3rd into 35/36, 6th into 36/37 and 5th into 37/38.
Pangs of the war (1939-1945)
In 1940, Alsace being annexed in Germany (July 1st), Racing must take the name of Rasensport Club Strassburg and give up professionalism, prohibited in Germany. Taken along by Oscar Heisserer, player of the team of France, Racing takes part then in Gauliga Elsass, the new championship of Alsace, qualifier for the final stage of Deutsche Meisterschaft, the championship of Germany.Under the technical direction of the German-Dutch trainer Karl Bostelaar, Racing is vice-champion of Alsace into 1941,1942 and 1943, finishing 6th in 1944. In 1944-45, the engagements for the release of Alsace prevent that Racing does not take share in Gauliga Elsass and then with the cut of France.
The apotheosis of the Cut (1945-1968)
After the Second world war, the Alsatian club finds France and the first division, but at the end of season 48/49, he is condemned to relegation. At this point in time occurs what one at the time regarded as a miracle. The SR Colmar liquidated their professional section. This fixed price involved the maintenance of Racing among the elite.
It finds colors the two following seasons but at the time of 51/52, the club of Meinau will know the worst with the first relegation in D2 at the conclusion of the worst year of the history of the club. A few months before however, the RCS beats the US Valencians 3/0, it is the first victory in Coupe de France after the two finales lost into 37 and 47.
One attends one is delirious in the streets of Strasbourg, the return of the winners is triumphal. The years which follow will not remain in annals, Strasbourg goes up then goes down again in D2. In 59, one inaugurates installations of the illumination and it is necessary to await the middle of the Sixties to find conquering Racing, in Coupe of the towns of fair.
The Coupe de France returns to Strasbourg in 1966, fifteen years afterwards.
Crisis and revival (1968-1978)
Will follow years without savor until the idea of fusion with the Pierrots of Strasbourg. In 1970, one adopts new statutes but Racing becomes again Racing Club of Strasbourg six years later. We are in 1976, the club is in D2 and will go up in D1. The trainer names Gilbert Gress and the players who compose this team are Albert Gemmrich, Léonard Specht…
Promoted the year in the third place finishes and prepares with living the most beautiful page of its history.
The gold season (1978-1979)
In 78/79, the Alsatian ones are strongest of France and become for the first and single time of their history champions of France. This season will remain like the reference. 56 points on the whole, 63 marked goals and only 28 boxed (better defense), unconquered with Meinau, Strasbourg is at the top of the French foot and even will qualify for the ¼ Finales of the Cut of Europe of the Clubs Champions the following season, eliminated by the Ajax Amsterdam. Unfortunately, this top will not last and Racing will plunge in the crisis.
After title (1979-1997)
The Eighties will be disasters reports and the “Blue ones” find D2 in 1986. Until 1992, separately a return ticket in D1, they will play the first parts…On the floor with the top. Thanks to a great match vis-a-vis Rennes gained 4/1, Strasbourg finds more the high level in 1992. In 95, a place finally of the Coupe de France (demolished 1/0) enables him to taste again with the perfume of the great matches and with the Cut of Europe, Racing will reach the eighth of Finale, eliminated by large the Inter Milan.
Two years later, he plays the first parts in championship all the year but finishes only 9th one exemplary season.
Era IMG (1997-2002)
In 1997, the group IMG is chosen by the municipality to take again the destinies of the club and the players trained by the captain champion of France in 1979 Jacky Duguépéroux will write a new page of the history of Racing by gaining the Cut of the League against Bordeaux.A very beautiful course in UEFA Cup will follow, after qualifications vis-a-vis the Glasgow Rangers and Liverpool FC, in 1/8 of finale, Racing beats the Inter Milan 2/0 in Meinau but inclines 3/0 with the return match.
Since, all the members of the club finally rebuild a future that all the Alsace hopes gorged with emotions to still engrave still and images of festival in the heart of its supporters, like those known on May 25th 2001 at the time of the victory of the Coupe de France vis-a-vis Amiens.
After one season with the “purgatory” in 2001/2002, Racing immediately found its place among the elite of hexagonal football by finishing vice-champion of L2.
Racing today (since 2002)
The season 2002/2003, which will see Racing finishing in encouraging a 13th place, will be marked by the withdrawal of the group IMG and the arrival of a news and ambitious executive team taken along by Egon Gindorf, which succeeds Patrick Proisy as a president, and by Marc Keller, appointed Managing director.Placed under the sign of the “reconquest”, season 2003/2004 must make it possible Racing to stabilize the club among the national elite and to regain the favors of the Alsatian public.
After many rather disappointing seasons, season 2004/2005 offered as for it many surprises to its supporters. The resumption of the reins by Jacky Duguépéroux made it possible Racing to take again colors. The success of this season was grown by the victory of the cut of the league (2-1 face has Caen, goal of Niang and Devaux) the second of the history of the club, which will make it possible to make find with all the amateurs of football and fan of Racing the joys and the adrenalin of the cut of Europe. Season 2005/2006 as for it will be placed under the sign of disappointment, and the spectrum of relegation was not long in being felt: after the departure of Mamadou Niang in July 2005, it is with the turn of Mickaël Pagis to leave the ship taking water at the time of the winter mercato of January 2006. It will be from now on very difficult in Racing to be maintained among the elite… These difficulties in championship strongly contrast with the performances made out of cut UEFA (elimination of the Graz AK, qualification into 1/16 of finale while leaving first of its hen (ACE Rome, FC Basle, Red Star of Belgrade, Tromsø IT), victory 0-2 with Lovetch (Bulgaria) in 1/16 of finale outward journey), then tie 0-0 with the return match. At February 27th, 2006, the RC Strasbourg is qualified for the 1/8 of finale of UEFA Cup, but is always relégable in championship (18th with 23 points). But the situation is not arranged because after the defeat against the FC Basle (2-0) and the defeats in championship against Rennes (2-1) and Mans (2-1) relegation and increasingly probable. After the defeat vis-a-vis Nancy (1-3), Racing is mathematically relegated Leagues 2 of them but president Philippe Ginestet already sees himself finding League 1. The May 6th 2006 Jean-Pierre Papin announces that he will be trainer of the team of the RC Strasbourg for the season 2006-2007. One of the French footballers most famous begins with the RC Strasbourg a new footballistic career.
With the current of the month of October 2006, Racing celebrates its centenary with the Stade of Meinau and disputes a match of official reception against the Olympique of Marseilles (0-1) followed by a fireworks.
In League 2, after a departure carefully (8th after 5 days), the RC Strasbourg finds the top of the table after its victory against Chateauroux at the time of the 7th day. Flirtant between 4th and the 6th place until the 12th day, the victory with Gueugnon (0-1) enables him to go up on the podium, that Racing did not leave any more since in spite of two defeats (Rheims, 2-0 and Metz, 4-1). But it remains on 3 matches without victory (2 null and 1 defeat) which moved away it from the first place. A short victory (1-0) against Rheims, one of the 3 clubs which beat the RCS this year, makes it possible Of Strasbourg to return in the 2nd place, behind a FC Metz mathematically promoted. If the results are favorable Racing, which peacefully approaches its displacement at Pinguouins of Libourne, its ticket for League 1 as of the reception of the Brest-native Stade could obtain. Indeed, since the snap received in Metz (4-1) last December, Racing connected 11 matches without defeats until the recent defeat with Istres (3-2). Strasbourg must have patience until the 37e day and a victory over its rival Metz 2 goals with 1 to be able to secure an increase Leagues 1 of them.
