The word rabbit is a very general term which indicates certain species of Mammifère S with large ears of the family of the léporidés . This animal being very present in the popular symbolic system, its name is largely used for various places or people. Many famous fictitious characters are also rabbits.
The animal
The rabbits have a silhouette less hurled than that of the Lièvre S; contrary to the latter they are born blind and naked and must thus remain hidden in a nest during more than one week before leaving to the free air. The Lapin domesticates is now high in the whole world.The denomination of rabbit changes according to the cases:
- the “conil” is the rabbit in the old texts,
- the “lapine” is the Femelle domestic rabbit.

The white rabbit is a character of the Japanese Mythologie as well as of the Western literature with that which Lewis Carroll makes continue by Alice with the country of the wonders and which one finds On the other side of the mirror or, more recently, that of the film Matrix tattooed on the shoulder of heroin. It is also traditionally the color of rabbits leaving the hat of the Prestidigitateur S.
The rabbit is also a sign of the Chinese horoscope and Astrologie at the Aztèques. For the latter the rabbit is a beneficial sign, symbol of abundance and work even if it is also associated with fear and drunkenness.
The reliefs and shades on the surface of the the Moon evoke for certain the shape of a rabbit. This last is thus often associated with the lunar symbols as at the Aztec ones.
The rabbit being very prolific , it is considered, with hare, like a symbol of fruitfulness in several countries. One also speaks about “heat rabbit” to evoke a man who collects the female conquests.
The rabbit and superstitions
The Patte of rabbit is sometimes regarded as an amulet.
