Rab

Rab (formerly Arbe , or Arba ) is a island of the Adriatic Sea located at broad of the Croatia and sheltering a city of the same name. The island 22 km is long and has a Superficie of 93,6 km ².

The island of Rab belongs to an archipelago of bay of Kvarner, located in Adriatic Sea at the north of Croatia. In addition to the small town of Rab, seven other idyllic places are with the various corners of the island: Barbat, Banjol, Fades, Kampor, Mundanije, Supetarska Draga and Lopar. The island counted 9480 inhabitants in 2001 and saw mainly agriculture, fishing, naval construction and tourism.

History

The island of Rab was inhabited since the Stone Age. In a place called Zidine (fortress) in the northern part of the island, which is called Lopar, one could count human establishments since the Stone Age, the age of copper then the Bronze Age until fourth century BC where an old military fortification Greek was established.

According to the legend, Sailor, the mythical founder of the Republic of San Marino, would be originating in Rab.
