Ra\' S Al Ghul

Ra' S Al Ghul (Litt. " head of démon" , of the Arab الغول, " Al-ghûl" , the demon) is a character of the cartoons Comic S of the mythology of Batman. It belongs to the inexhaustible bank of the enemy of the Knight of Gotham.

Biography

Ra' S Al Ghul (sometimes written Râ' S Al Ghûl) is a professional of martial arts, in particular " ninjutsu". It directs a sect which calls upon certain demons. It has a girl: Talia Al Ghul

With time, it became most mysterious and most skilful of the enemies of Batman, without needing to join to the other criminals of bottom stages; it is not like the others. Nobody knows exactly when it was born, but it claims to have lived more than six hundred years, and it seems quite immortal. Its secrecy comes in fact from a single energy source, the well of Lazare. It produces a substance whose composition is unknown, and who renews the level of the body, like the Fountain of Youth. However, other side of the coin, the matter affects its mental, giving him very rigid values morals and a tendency to the crises of insanity. He regards himself as above the laws of this humanity which he hates.

Ra' S is the chief of a world criminal organization, the League of the Assassins, whose mission is to purify a planet polluted by the defect and the mediocrity, with an aim of creating a better world according to the ideals of this autoproclamé Messiah. It was always accompanied by its faithful bodyguard, Ubu. It has many feelers, and directs a worship as the organization filled men who will make its offer. It is extremely dangerous and skilful.

Its interest towards Batman emerged when it felt that the well of Lazare started to be dried up. Ra' S, thinking that it was necessary for a heir to him, judged that it needed a male to be his successor. Since its only offspring was a girl, Talia Al Ghul, it had to choose a male to marry it, a man who is worthy of his future empire.

Appearances

Between 1992 and 1995, Ra' S Al Ghul appears, incarnated by David Warner in the English original version of the televised series Batman, the animated series.

Film adaptations

Ra' S Al Ghul seems to be interpreted by Ken Watanabe at the beginning of the film Batman Begins of Christopher Nolan, left on big screen in 2005. Professional of the Martial arts collecting the billionaire Bruce Wayne when this last is found captive in Asia. Leading head of the “League of the shades”, a terrorist secret organization which has, through the times, “purged the humanity of its defects” and would have made fall the great empires “at the top from their decline”. The new target, Gotham City. One further discovers in fact in film, at the time of the reception of birthday of Bruce to the Wayne Manor, that the character whom one believed being the Master of the League of the shades was only one lure; it was in fact Ducard, played by Liam Neeson, which was Ra' S Al Ghul.
