The Royal Football Club of Liege (R.F.C.L in summary) is a Belgian club of Football of the town of Liege. Founded in 1892, first Champion of Belgium of the history in 1896 (5 titles on the whole), his number is the n°4.
History
This club was founded in 1892 under the name of Liege Football Club and became in 1895 founding member of the Belgian royal Union of the companies of football association as Football Club Inhabitant of Li2ege. The club was the first champion of Belgium in (1896). In 1920, the prefix Royal was added in the name of the club whereas this one counted already 3 championships national. In 1952 and 1953, the RFC Liege gained 2 additional titles, while being, at that time, the only team with being able to dispute the domination of the Royal Sporting Club of Anderlecht. In 1964, the RFC Liege will arrive in 1/2 finales of the Cut of the Towns of Fair (ancestor of UEFA Cup) vis-a-vis Real Saragossa, future victorious of the test, and will be eliminated only during one third match from support. Between 1965 and 1980, the results were in teeth of saw, and the club found its safety only in its famous tradition of formative club of young talented players and in the faithful unwavering support of supporters.During the Years 1980, the RFC Liege took part in several European campaigns (by in particular eliminating the Benfica Lisbon, the Rapid of Vienna and Hibernian FC, and holding the high dragee with the Juventus FC, the Werder of Bremen and the Athletic Bilbao). It also gained the Coupe of Belgium in 1990. Unfortunately, after this period ostentation, the club had to face serious financial problems which led it to the bankruptcy. Its stage fetish of Rocourtfut sold and destroyed to make place with a cinematographic complex. In 1995, the RFC Liege was taken again by the leaders of number 21, the RFC Flax stripper (a team of the suburbs of Liege, then in the 3rd division). This old club with the prestigious past disappeared, leaving the place to number 4. In homage, the club taken as name " Royal Flax stripper Football Liégeois" Club; (or RTFCL) and moved in the stage of Buraufosse, the old stage of the RFC Flax stripper.
In addition to sporting retrogradation from which the club could not escape (it finished last season 1994-1995), the Belgian Union of Football declared fusion nonin conformity and punishes the club of an additional administrative retrogradation. Number 4 fell thus of the first division (which it had never left since 1945) with the third division. The first season of the RTFCL was crowned success with a direct promotion in D2. The continuation is much less amusing for the club with a forced departure of Buraufosse, in the year 2000, towards the Stage of Pairay (old stage of the RFC Seraing), returns to its old name of RFC Liege and especially, a very poor presidency which inserts the club more than what it does not help it. The result of that is a new retrogradation in 2003, administrative that one (refusal of license of D2) and a new sporting retrogradation as of the following season. The club is found in Promotion D (Division 4 Belgian) with a future of most dubious at the dawn of the season 2004-05.Le club moves once again, this time, towards the Communal Stage of Years (which is always the present stage of the club) and changes president. Jules Dethier takes again a club in full doubt and sifted debts coming from the old presidency. The RFC Liege finishes in modest an eighth place (on sixteen) and risks with the intersaison a new administrative retrogradation because of the above-mentioned debts. But the club manages to find arrangements and avoids this relegation.
The club from now on is given on the right tracks. The RFC of Liege finished the season 2005-2006 with unhoped-for and all the more beautiful 3rd place offering in addition the accession to him to the final turn of promotion. The June 3rd, 2006, the RFC of Liege gains the last match of the final turn 2005-2006 and is qualified for division 3. All the hopes are allowed for a rapid return towards a statute more in connection with the reputation of the club and its prize list.
Stages
The ground of the club is currently located street Gilles Magnée, with Ans (to 5 km of the center of Liege). A new stage should see the day for the beginning of the season 2007 - 08. It will be probably set up in Alleur beside the new training center of the club, and to 2 km hardly of its old stage of Rocourt. It is there that the RFCL was during more than 70 years owner of its stage, immense vessel which was also the witness of two championships of the World of cycling. The stage cycle-racing track of Rocourt (also called the stage Flesch Oscar) remains historically the stage which refers. But the history of the club knew, at its beginnings and since the demolition of the stage of Rocourt, of many removals.
