RABDe 500

The train RABDe 500 belongs to the ICN (InterCity-Neigezug, pendular InterCity French), category of train and rolling stock of the federal Railroads Swiss.

The first tests proceeded in 1999. Today, there exist 44 specimens of RABDe 500 (RABDe500-000 with RABDe500-043).

The first series (from 000 to 023) was brought into service 1999 at 2001 and the second series (024 to 043) of 2003 at 2005. It began its career the May 28th 2000 for a correspondence Saint-Gall - Zurich - Bienne - Lausanne/Geneva.

It was developed by the companies Bombardier Inc., SBB-CFF-FFS and Alstom. The system of slope of the train was developed by SIG. The aerodynamic design was drawn by Pininfarina.

With regard to traditional rolling stock, the advantage of the pendular trains is in the reduction of duration of the voyage on the sinuous lines characterizing the mountainous countries without modifications of infrastructure. A system of active pendulation lowers the point of gravity of the car and inclines it towards the interior of the turn, which authorizes the passage of the curves at an high speed, and allows on a route to gain 10 to 20% of time.

Technical information

The ICN RABDe 500 is a motorized Rame - there is no Locomotive strictly speaking.

The length of a oar is of 188,8 m for a width of 2,83 m for a weight of 395 tons.

The ICN often functions with two complete compositions of oars connected between them, representing a length of 380 then Mr. An oar is made up of seven cars, including a restaurant car. The cars of ends include/understand a driving cabin and a compartment traveller of second class. Come to intercalate two cars of first class, then the restaurant car with a first class compartment followed by a car of second class. In the first class, certain compartments have electrical outlets and allow the reception of the cellphone. An oar is made up of 131 places of first class and of 326 places of second class, that is to say 457 places per oar. The restaurant car includes/understands 23 places and 6 folding seats (removed in the oars of the second series).

The whole of these cars constitutes an oar which can be neither decreased, nor lengthened. Another characteristic of this oar is that it can, for reasons of maintenance, being divided into two in order to form two independent half-oars.

The driving form is electric and develops 5200 kw (that is to say 7100 CV) for a couple with the starting of 210 kN. It is provided by 8 engines.

The oar has two pantograph S installed with the top of the first car of first class and the restaurant car for the collecting of the electricity, of which only one is raised in the direction of walk. A series of Transformer S, converters and Onduleur S are under the floor of the cars to bring back the tension of 15.000 V coming from the Caténaire S to different tensions of service serving as the engines until the needs for the travellers.

The 8 engines are placed under the cars of second class (2 per car) between the Bogie S. Ainsi the car of first class is saved electric noises of the asynchronous motors. The transmission is done by Cardan joint and friction clutch.

The ICN RABDe 500 can circulate at a maximum speed of 200km/h. It currently functions with 160km/h on the conventional lines because of the geometry of the sinuous lines of the country. On the other hand, on the section Mattstetten - Rothrist (NBS) and Soleure - Wanzwil (ABS), the train rolls to 200 km/h thanks to system ETCS of embarked indication.

The ICN RABDe 500 is a pendular train which is inclined according to speed and of the curve until a maximum angle of 8°. Management is entirely computerized. In order to guarantee a good power supply of the oar, the pantograph must be also inclined on a maximum angle of 6°, but in the opposite direction of the cases.

Correspondences

Trains ICN RABDe 500 circulate on the following lines:

Because of dense circulation between Winterthour and Lenzburg, the ICN RABDe 500 go to this place at the same speed as of the traditional trains. On the other parts of the route, the speed is roughly increased from 10 to 20%.

Characteristics

Trains ICN RABDe 500 bear names of eminent Swiss personalities (like Jeremias Gotthelf, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Mani Matter, Le Corbusier and well of others) except one which bears the name of Expo 02 , in the honor of the national exposure of the same name, and which was used for this destination.

The official startup of the ICN RABDe 500 had delay caused by problems of provisioning of one of the subcontractors. Nevertheless, rolling stock was entirely ready for the Expo.02 which was used to him as technological window.
