History

Composition

Mahler composed four of the five songs at the time of a stay to the " Mahler" villa; at the time of the summer 1901. The last composed song, is a poem that Mahler put in music in July 1902 for his wife, Alma Mahler. It hid the manuscript in the partition of Siegfried that Alma often deciphered. Unfortunately for the type-setter, Alma did not come to decipher the partition for several days. Gustav thus invited Alma with a meeting of deciphering, which made him discover the manuscript, which almost made it cry.

Creation and reception

The first four Lieder were created with Vienna the January 29th 1905, by selected members of the Wiener Philharmoniker. The concert, in which the Kindertotenlieder and some were also created Wunderhorn Lieder, was one of great successes of the career of Mahler. Paul Stefan wrote some: “One exultait with him, one shared successively his affliction, its childish, merry or rêveuses moods. One took pleasure to be filled with wonder at his science and his control of the small forms, as with a splendid blooming of beautiful poems. ”
