Río Urubamba
The Río Urubamba with the Peru, is an important and partially navigable, tributary river of the Río Apurímac thus of the the Amazon. It is born in the Andes cordillera in south-east from Cuzco close to the limit with the Région to Puno (where it is called Vilcanota ), and runs in north-western direction during 724 km, before joining bottom Apurímac with Atalaya to form the Ucayali.
One subdivides the course of Urubamba in two parts, Bottom and High Urubamba, of which the limit is defined by a canyon of disaster reputation, the Pongo de Mainique. The valley of High Urubamba is very populated and cultivated intensively by irrigation. One finds there many vestiges of the Empire INCA, of which the famous city of Machu Picchu.
Low Urubamba is developed and little populated relatively little. One finds there various people Amerindian, mainly the Machiguengas (or Matsigenkas) and the Ashaninkas. The economy is especially forest, but one finds there also the layers gas of Camisea. The principal city is Sepahua.
