Río Parapetí

The Río Parapetí is a river of Bolivia which has its source in the the Andes, crosses the Bolivian Chaco and is thrown finally in the depression of Bañados of Izozog. There its abundant water is divided into three parts.

  • a good part evaporates being given the intensity of heat in this part of the Chaco boreal thus tropical, and the vastness of Izozog (6 200 km ²).

  • By time of large risings, río Parapetí feeds emissary of Izozog which communicates with Río San Miguel, which is not other than the higher portion of the Río Itonamas pertaining to the basin of the Río Guaporé, therefore Río Madeira. It feeds also a second emissary of Izozog, the Río Quimome which pours its water in the Lagune Concepción.

  • Enfin a considerable proportion of this contribution out of water in Izozog infiltrates in the basement and supplies later the basin of the Río Paraguay. The infiltrated quantities were estimated by FAO at 2,5 kilometers cubic (or billion m ³) annually, that is to say more or less 80 cubic meters a second.

The surface of its basin (Bañados of Izozog included) is of 61.903 km ².

The September 17th 2001, Bolivia indicated like site Ramsar the unit formed by Río Parapetí and Bañados of Izozog.
