Río Limay
The Río Limay is an important river of the west of the Argentine. It constitutes the branch principal mother of the river Río Negro.
Geography
It is born at the Eastern end from the lake Nahuel Huapi, of which he is the emissary, then runs while curving on a few 500 kilometers, collecting affluents like Río Traful, Río Pichileufú and the Río Collón Curá, to its confluence with Río Neuquén, forming together, consequently the Río Negro. It is used as border between the provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro on almost all its course.
Hydrology
Its deep water is clear and very abundant. The flow of Río Limay is of 700 m ³ a second on average, that is to say as much as the flow of the Elba in Germany and almost as much as the the Loire in France. Its basin of drainage has a surface of 61.723 km ² and includes all the rivers running towards the Atlantic in the area, themselves almost all exits of a network of Andean lakes very wide.
Hydroelectricity
On the course of Río Limay, one built several stoppings (five) in order to generate hydroelectricity. It is: stoppings of Alicurá, Piedra del Águila, El Chocón, Arroyito and Pichi Picún Leufú. With the power station of Cerros Colorados on the Río Neuquén, they contribute to the production moreover of the quarter of the electric production of the country.On his course, one also built the single heavy water factory of South America, in the locality of Arroyito, province of Neuquén.
