Río Hondo
The Río Hondo is a River of Central America of approximately 209 kilometers length. It runs out in an head office south-north then is thrown in the Baie of Chetumal, which leads to the Caribbean Sea. Most of its course is used as border between the Belize and Mexico.
The río Hondo is formed by the junction of the Río Azul destined for Belize Blue Creek whose sources are in the sierras of the Guatemala and who forms to him also part of the border between Mexico and Belize and, of the Río Bravo or Chanchich coming from the Belize although its sources are they also located at Guatemala. The meeting of these two rivers is carried out near Unión, a village of the Mexican State of Quintana Roo. and of Blue Creek Village in Belize. The river runs then in direction of North crossing the localities of Subteniente López in Mexico and Santa Elena in the Belize and is thrown finally in bay of Chetumal near the capital of Quintana Roo, Chetumal.
The río Hondo is the most important permanent river surface of the area, indeed the grounds limestones of the Péninsule of Yucatán are very permeable and absorb water which then forms underground rivers and Cénote S, local form of the Doline S. This is why this river acquired an major importance in the history of the area as a source of fresh water but especially like penetration in direction of the interior of the grounds centers, becoming a key component for the development of the South of Quintana Roo like North of Belize and this of the time even of the Maya Civilization as the presence of multiple sites shows it archaeological near the río.
