Río Cuarto

The Río Cuarto or Río Chocancharava is a river which traverses the center-south of the province Argentine of Córdoba. It is born in the extreme south from the Sierra from Córdoba, in the branch called Sierra of Comechingones . In its higher course it is called río of mow Barrancas , receiving the name of Río Cuarto at its exit of Piedmont after having joined several rivers.

The denomination río Cuarto drift of the series of the rivers which Spanish discovered in XVIe century starting from the town of Córdoba. " Chocancharava" or " Chocancharaua" is a denomination aboriginal, undoubtedly coming from the old ethnos group het. These indigenous names were reactivated by decree at the end of the XXe century.

With leaving the sierras, it runs through the plain of the wet pampa, in south-eastern direction until it reaches a tectonic depression where it forms the marshes called Bañados del Saladillo or Bañados de Loboy. There its course changes direction and is directed towards the North-East. At its exit of the above-named bañados, the river receives it name of Río Saladillo' . This last joins the Río Tercero or Ctalamochita and together they form the Río Carcarañá.

The overall length of Río Cuarto is more or less 400 km, although it is not named like on 300 km roughly. Its mode is before very rain with nival contribution in the tops of the sierras, which gives a spring increase following the pig iron and cast iron in snows. This increases the flow at the end of the spring (November) and during the summer. The estival medium flow is of 7,2 m ³ /s, but it passes to 70 m ³ /s during the risings (in 1943 an exceptional rising reached the flow of 200 m ³ /s).

The principal localities and cities located on its course are Alpa Corral, Río Cuarto, Villa Reducción, Alejandro Roca and Carlota, while on the section of called Saladillo one finds the cities of Assembles Maíz and Monte Buey.
