Río Abaucán
The Río Abaucán is a river of Argentine which runs in the provinces of Catamarca and Rioja, in areas with very weak precipitations.
Description of its course
It is born in north from the Département from Tinogasta (of the province of Catamarca), from the junction of several rivers, resulting from the cast iron of snows and precipitations of very Andean high summits, the such volcano Nevado Incahuasi (6638 meters), the Cerro El Muerto (6488) and the Cerro Negro of Laguna Verde (5764), which dominates in addition the basin of the Salina of Laguna Verde.
At the beginning, it is called Río Chascuil , then, after having received on the right the collector of the Cerro Cenizo (5227 meters of altitude), it becomes the Río Guanchín to the thermal small town of Fiambalá. There, it receives on its left the río Fiambalá, a periodic affluent come from the north which drains all the southern part of the Cordillère of San Buenaventura and of the Sierra of Culampajá , all very dry areas. It bears consequently the name of Río Abaucán , and takes its final orientation towards south-east. It passes close to the town of Tinogasta, then constitutes the limit south-south-east of the basin of the Salar de Pipanaco, with which it happens that there is interaction.
From this section of his course, one calls it Río Salado or Colorado or Bermejo . It passes in the province of Rioja. Leaving the basin of Pipanaco, it threads between the Sierra of Ambato and the Sierra of Velasco . A little later it finishes its course while being lost in a salted semi-desert called Desagües del Río Salado .
Flow
The measurements made during nearly 40 years during the XXe century give him a very reduced flow compared to the importance of its basin. With Tinogasta, it was of 2,54 m ³ a second, with a daily maximum of 85 cubic meters. At this place, its basin measures already a few 28.300 km ², that is to say close to the surface of Belgium.
The area of Tinogasta is an oasis well supplied with the río Abaucán, like by the underground sheets of water. It is famous for its vineyards. By after the discharge of river will go decreasing, because not receiving more worthy contributions to be mentioned, and losing its water by infiltration (very permeable sandy zones) and evaporation (high temperature in plain). Nevertheless it largely provides enough water to supply the rare human establishments located on its course.
Interaction with the salar of Pipanaco
In the part of its course where it delimits the southern zone of the basin of the Salar de Pipanaco, its bed is about with same hator as the salar. In the event of important rising of the affluents of the salar, this last can overflow and send its water surplus in the río Abaucán, contributing to the saliniser deeply. The opposite interaction can also occur.
International way transandine
Important the trunk road 60 (RN 60), which connects Córdoba to Chile, via the collar Paso of San Francisco (4.748 m), follows the course of the río Abaucán on almost all its course.
Mode and basin
Its mode is purely nival, related to the snow melt of the Andean tops. Its basin has a surface of 43 386 square kilometers, is a little more than that of the Suisse.
