Réthymnon (in modern Greek Το Ρέθυμνο ) is a Greek city of 32.694 inhabitants (2001) located on the island of Crete. It is the capital of the Nome of Réthymnon (administrative area).

The city was built during the Antiquité, without to be a great center. However, it was enough powerful to strike its own currency. One of these coins is represented today on the Armoiries of the city. It is probably the town of Crete which best preserved its old character with many Venetian vestiges and Turkish. Rethymnon developed again when Venetian, the then main ones of the island, sought to establish an intermediate shopping mall between Héraklion and Caned. The old city of today date almost entirely of the Venetian time.

Today the city draws its pricipaux incomes from tourism. It is also the site of the philosophical school of the Université of Crete.
