Réjean Ducharme

Réjean Ducharme is a writer, Dramaturge, scenario writer and sculptor Québécois born with Saint-Felix-with-Valois, Quebec, the August 12th 1941.

He would always live Montreal, but he lives in the most total secrecy. Some even doubt that Réjean Ducharme is its true name. The legend wants that he traverses the metropolis, going several hours per day, by making the collection of various rejects, of which it is used for to manufacture sculptures.

For four decades, the artist has refused any request for interview and does not make any public appearance. Hardly two photographs of him exist, and only some extremely rare letters with the daily newspapers were published, at the beginning of its career.

Beginnings

Réjean Ducharme is an immediate success, as of the publication in 1966 of its novel swallowed swallowed , which devotes it instantaneously like one of the Québécois great writers of its generation. In spite of the young age of its author, the novel will be put in nomination for the price Goncourt.

The publication of the first work of a writer of this gauge by a French editor sows the controversy in these years when the Québécois Nationalisme knows a seldom equalized effervescence. The Circle of the book of France, publisher of Pierre Tisseyre, had refused a manuscript of Ducharme, and this rejection encouraged the writer to turn rather to Gallimard.

Topics approached

The childhood and the rejection of the world of the adults are among the topics which frequently return in the work of Ducharme. The heroin of swallowed swallowed is a child, Bérénice; main characters of the nose which voque is teenagers world cups. The references on these subjects in particular, doubled secrecy which surrounds the intimate life of the author, exacerbated several comparisons between Réjean Ducharme and the American writer J.D. Salinger. This last lives however in total reclusion and does not publish anything the decades since, contrary to Ducharme.

In its work, Réjean Ducharme is characterized by the frequent recourse to the word games, the Néologisme S and the inventions of language, which makes its style particularly alive and single. Contrary to several of its contemporaries of the years 1960 and 1970, he does not write in Joual, although local expressions or Québécois swearwords appear sometimes in its work.

Visual song, cinema and arts

Réjean Ducharme wrote some important songs of the repertory of Robert Charlebois, such My country (it is not a country it is a job) , Heureux in love and the Violent one alone (chu tanned) . It also composed some for Pauline Julien of them.

In the Cinema, he collaborated in the scenarios of two films of Francis Mankiewicz: the Good Boxrooms in 1980 and the Beautiful Memories in 1981.

He is also sculptor. Its works, which it calls trophoux , are signed name of Roch Plante. It does not make more public intervention at the time of the revealing of its sculptures.
