Râmnicu Sărat

Râmnicu Sărat , in French Rimnik , is a town of Romania, in the Judeţ de Buzău, on the Rimnik river.

It is located in a plain at the east of the Carpates. Its population was of 3.134 inhabitants in 1900, including 1.500 Jews. It has today of 40.172 inhabitants (2004).

History

Rimnik was the site of battles between the Moldavian and the Valaques in 1434 and 1573, and between Othoman Valaches and the in 1634.

It was also there that in 1789, during the Russo-Turkish Guerre of 1787-1792, the general Souvorov, with the head of a Russian and Austrian army, beat the Othomans (see: Battle of Rimnik), and took thus the nickname of Rimnikski .

In 1854, the city was almost entirely destroyed by fire and was rebuilt.
