Quintet

In Music, a quintet indicates, either an intermediate type of formation between the Quatuor and the Sextuor, or a Musical genre - or a musical Forme - intended to be interpreted by this formation.

Musical formation

A quintet - or quintet , in Jazz - is first of all a musical Ensemble composed of five Musicien S Soliste S, or of five groups of musicians - i.e., five Pupitre S.

In Classical music, and more precisely, in Chamber music, here the instrumental combinations most current of the quintet:

  • four instruments of a String quartet (Violins I and II, Viola, Violoncello) more one second viola: Mozart, Dittersdorf, Boccherini, Mendelssohn, Dvořák, Bruckner, etc

  • four instruments of a String quartet more a Piano, called “quintet with Piano” or “quintet for cords and Piano”: Schumann, Brahms, Dvořák, Franck, Fauré, Enesco, Chostakovitch, etc

  • a piano plus a quartet with winds, called “quintet for Piano and winds”: Mozart, Beethoven, Rimski-Korsakov, etc

  • a quintet of coppers

  • Like any other combination including/understanding five instruments (quintet of percussion, etc), or alternative of one of the combinations mentioned above, for example:

    • four instruments of a String quartet more a Double bass: Dvořák, Milhaud, etc
    • the quintet “the Trout” of Schubert, written for piano, violin, viola, violoncello and double bass
    • the quintet of Prokofiev writes for Hautbois, Clarinette, Violon, viola and Contrebasse.

Musical genre

A quintet is also a Musical genre dedicated to this type of formation. It indicates a piece of music with five then left simultaneous, intended to be interpreted by five Soliste S, with or without accompaniment.

  • In the Chamber music, the word indicates a Sonate for five instruments soloists.
