Quinquina
The quinquina (Cinchona officinalis) is a shrub or a small tree sempervirent of the family of the Rubiacées, originating in the South America.
Use
The bark of the quinquina contains Alcaloïde S, of which the Quinine, which has recognized medicinal properties. Was used it formerly to treat the Paludisme.
History
Quinquina or Kina-kina (bark of the barks) is imported in Europe under the name of bark of the Peru. It is in this country that the Indians had discovered its antimalaric properties. This bark owes its Latin denomination with the woman of the viceroy of Peru, the Comtesse of El Chinchon which would have owed its cure with the use of this bark. Grateful, it facilitated the introduction of this drug in Spain where it bore the name of " Powders of Comtesse". Then, marketed by the Jesuits, it became " Powders of Jésuites". To fight against the Paludisme which prevails a little everywhere and does not save the area of Versailles, Louis XIV makes it import in France. When Simon-Auguste Tissot published his work on “the Onanisme, test on the diseases produced by the masturbation”, which knew sixty-three editions between 1760 and 1905. It recommended amongst other things the quinquina as being the best remedy to cure the diseases caused by l" onanism
