Quinchao island

The island Quinchao is the larger second island of the Archipel of Chiloé, with a surface of 120 km ². It is separated from the Isla Grande of Chiloé by the Dalcahue channel.

It includes most of the territory of the commune of Quinchao and all the commune of Curaco de Vélez (80 km ²).

Its relief is the result of the meeting between the plates Nazca and South American, of the displacement of the glaciers (Quaternary), permanent precipitations and the winds which modelled the geomorphology of the island. It does not comprise by river of importance. The major part of the original Bois was replaced by meadows and the culture of the potato. The main ports of the island are Achao, Quinchao, Curaco de Vélez and Chullec.

There exists a daily service of shuttles in the Dalcahue channel which spends five minutes to traverse the distance between Dalcahue and Pasada. The roads inside the island are not tarred, except for a sector of 21 km. between Pasada and Achao.
