Quiévrain

Quiévrain (in Picardy Kievrin ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of Hainaut. It is a frontier commune with France, whose common neighbor and almost homonym are Quiévrechain.

Etymology

History

The village of Quiévrain was crossed by a Roman roadway and currencies, tiles etc were discovered there. At the beginning of the 10th century an act of Charles the Simple one in fact mention. With the Middle Ages, the lords of Quiévrain are owners of the places which include also Hensies and Baisieux. Here is ground of Quiévrain which returns under the property of a hennuyère family. This Simon will be the founder of the branch of Lalaing-Quiévrain. He quarters his weapons into 1 and 4 of mouths with 10 joined and acollés rhombuses of money placed 3,3,3,1, (Lalaing) with the lambel with 3 hanging of azure and the 2 and 3d' gold with the bandaged chief of money and mouths of 6 parts (Quiévrain). Simon Ier de Lalaing is lord of Quiévrain, of Hordain, seneshal of Ostrevant, several times large baillif of Hainaut and lord of the manor of Ath. This branch will hold the seigniory of Quiévrain until 1428 because Simon III lord of Quiévrain and Ecaussinnes will have only two girls whose elder one will make pass the ground of Quiévrain in the family of Châtilon-Blois while marrying to Olivier, count de Penthièvre. As they did not have any descent, it is his/her puinée sister who inherited Quiévrain. She married Jean de Croÿ, Ier count de Chimay in 1467. in XVIeme century, Quiévrain will be the property of the family of Arenberg and will remain it until the French revolution.
