Queens is one of the five districts (Borough) of the town of New York to the the United States, with Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. It coincides with the county of Queens , cutting administrative of the State of New York. In 2000, its population was of 2  229  379 inhabitants. Created on November 1st 1683, he was baptized in the honor of the queen consort ( queen consort ) Catherine de Bragance, wife of the king Charles II of England.

Geography

The district of Queens occupies part of the island of Long Island, like its Brooklyn neighbor. It also includes/understands other small islands, the majority being located in Jamaica Bay. The entire surface of the county east of 461 km ², including 282,9 km ² of emerged grounds and 178,8 km ² of water. It is in surface widest of the boroughs of New York. Queens is connected to Manhattan by the Pont of Queensboro. The only road access to Roosevelt Island is starting from the Queens, by a smaller bridge at the end of the 36e which occurred.

Demography

The Queens east one of the multi-most ethnic districts of the New Yorkean agglomeration. Immigrants coming from all the continents settle here for a long time because of the proximity of Manhattan, connected to the Queens by the subway and of the reasonable rents. 130 nationalities, 500.000 new arrivals during the ten last years, 50% of without-papers, such are the demographic data of the district.

The population is made up of 44% “white” inhabitants of European origin, of 20% of Afro-américain S, 17,5% the Asian ones, the remainder having other origins. 23% of the population of the Queens have less than 18 years.

In the zone of Flushing a strong concentration of population of Chinese origin is and Korean (see Chinatown).

History

At the beginning, the county of Queens included a close zone which includes the county of Nassau now. It is one of the 12 counties created at the same time as the State of New York in 1683. Before 1870, the county of Queens had six communes: Newtown, Flushing, Jamaica, North Hempstead, Hempstead, and Oyster Bay. In 1870 the town of Length Island ( Long Island City ) there was built-in. Length Island City, Newtown, Flushing, Jamaica, and the part Rockaway Peninsula de Hempstead became the borough of Queens of New York on January 1st 1898. The part of County Queens which was not annexed to the town of New York (North Hempstead, Oyster Bay and the town of Hempstead except for Rockaway Peninsula) constituted the county of Nassau in 1899.

Economy

The saving in Queens rests on tourism, industry and the trade. Queens shelters two major airports of New York, the John-F International airport. - Kennedy in the district of Jamaica and the International airport of Guardia in Flushing.

Also more and more movie studios there are found (Queens was one of the cradles of American cinema industry before this one does not emigrate with Hollywood). One can in particular quote Kaufman Studio in the district of Astoria, which produces many televised shows.

Queens east also becoming an artistic crossroads, with the presence of the P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, of the Museum Noguchi, the Socrates Sculpture Park, the museum of African Art and the museum of Queens. The popular quarters of Queensbridge are a fish pond of the music Hip-hop.

One finds also Shea Stadium in Flushing Meadow-Corona Park. It is about the stage where the team of baseball the “New York Mets plays”, and which was the first stage to have accommodated a concert (The Beatles on August 15th 1965). With the park of Flushing Meadow also the World Fairs of 1939 and 1964 settled ( International exhibition of New York 1964-1965) .

Since 1978, each year, the Open US of tennis is held with Flushing Meadows.
