Queen Mary

RMS Queen Mary , called the " Old-Lady" is a British transatlantic liner of the Cunard Line.

Built in Scotland, Queen Mary is launched in September 1934, and accomplishes her inaugural voyage in May 1936.

The August 24th 1936, it obtained the blue Ruban by beating the record of the Normandy, with a mean velocity of 30,14 nodes (55,82 km/h). The Normandy takes again the ribbon in 1937, but it is finally the Queen Mary who regains the ribbon in August 1938.

The Second world war

At this point in time the Second world war burst. Queen Mary leaves for Sydney, where it is converted, with several other steamers, by ship of transport to take along the soldiers Australia NS and New Zealand towards the the United Kingdom. It is joined by the Queen Elizabeth. They are then the ships of transport of the fastest troops largest and implied in the war, often carrying 15.000 men in a simple crossing, often in convoy and without escort. Because of their sizes and their prestige, their shipwrecks were a priority for the German navy. However, their high speed meant that it was impossible for of U-Boats catching up with them. In 1942, Queen Mary accidentally made run one of her escorts, light cruiser HMS Curacao, causing the loss of 338 lives.

After the war, Queen Mary and Queen Elisabeth dominated the transatlantic traffic of passengers, while ensuring, with them two, a weekly service between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York. Queen Mary was put at the retirement in 1967 and the Queen Elizabeth in 1968. The Queen Elizabeth 2 took again the transatlantic crossings in 1969, always in service, it is followed in 2004 by the Queen Mary 2.
