Quartet

Musical genre

A quartet is also a piece of music or a Musical genre dedicated to this type of formation. It then indicates a music intended to be interpreted by four soloists, with or without accompaniment.

For example, the quartet of the fourth act of the Rigoletto of Giuseppe Verdi - four Singer S plus the orchestral accompaniment .

In the Classical music, and more precisely, in the Chamber music, many quartets are in fact of the “sonatas in quartet”, of the “sonatas with four”.

  • When the term indicates a unit made up of two Violon S, a viola and a Violoncelle, the quartet then takes the name of String quartet.

  • When the second violin of a string quartet is replaced, by a Clarinette, a Flûte, a Piano - for example -, this formation takes then, respectively, the name of Quatuor with clarinet, Quatuor with flute, Quatuor with piano, etc
