French Army
At the 19th century, the quartermaster-sergeant is, in a company, the fourth more graded in the hierarchical order, after the Capitaine, the lieutenant and the Sous-lieutenant and more graded Sous-officier S (there is no then Adjudant). Nevertheless, taking into account the various missions, the training courses, the vacation, etc the quartermaster-sergeant was often the assistant of the captain ordering the company. He is also the president of the warrant officers and the accountant of the unit. He organizes the interior service of the company, as well with the district as on the ground.
The quartermaster-sergeant is then a warrant officer of elite and the body a fish pond for the choice of the Officier S.
After the reforms which follow the war of 1870, it becomes more difficult for them to reach the rank of officer taking into account the restrictions of age. With the reform of manpower within the Battalion S and the addition of a warrant officer, rank of Adjudant, by company, the quartermaster-sergeant is confined with purely administrative tasks.
He was not named any more of quartermaster-sergeant since 1964 and the rank was definitively removed in 1971.
