Quartering Act
Quartering Act (law of quartering of the troops) indicates at least two laws voted by the Parlement of the United Kingdom, in 1765 and 1774.
Act of 1765
The first Act , of the March 24th 1765, provides that the the United Kingdom will place its soldiers in America in barracks and public buildings, but that if the number of soldiers is more important than the number of these residences, then they will take their districts in inns, cattle sheds, deposits of vivres, like in the houses of the merchants of wine, rum, cognac, cider, brandy or Hydromel, and than if this number is always insufficient, they will place in uninhabited houses, shelters, barns or other buildings, requiring their inhabitants (or in their absence, representatives official) to provide them food, alcohol, candles, vinegar, salt, bed linen and ustensils, on a purely grâcieux basis.
Act of 1774
The June 2nd 1774, the Parliament votes a group of laws including one new Quartering Act . This act is one of the Intolerable Acts , or Punitive Acts , or Coercive Acts , of which the goal is to ensure the British Juridiction on the thirteen colonies of North America. New the Quartering Act extends the preceding legislation, it is expected that the troops are not only placed in commercial or empty buildings but also in inhabited houses. The law will highly be disputed, symbolizing for the colonists the potential dangers and the abuses which one can await from a troop of occupation.
Consequences today
The two laws led directly to the Third Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, which formally prohibits with the American troops to take their districts without the agreement of the owner of the places. Pure produces of their time, the Acts and the third Amendment was the subject only one legal case in addition to two hundred years (Engblom v. Carey).
