Quarter (marine)

A quarter , in navy or for the army, is the fraction of time during which a team is of service or faction. It indicates also an angular sector of the Compass card.

Quarter (day before - service)

On a boat, on the way permanently, the need for ensuring a constant day before to avoid the Boarding S and to supervise the weather always forced the crew to be distributed the task. One day is often cut out in 6 quarters (four hours periods). These quarters then indicated for each person her part of work ( I will take my quarter ). At the time of the navy with veil, the crews were divided into two quarters, that of Bâbord (bâbordais them) and that of Tribord (tribordais them) in order to differentiate them easily.

The international Payment to prevent the boardings at sea clearly states the requirement of the quarter in rule 5: Any ship must permanently ensure a visual and auditive day before suitable, by also using all the means available which are adapted to the existing circumstances and conditions, so as to allow a full appreciation of the situation and risk of boarding. One can note that races of several days as a recluse of the type Vendée Globe, Route of rum are however organized in spite of obvious contradiction with the rule. The races are tolerated by the authorities.

Quarter (angular sector)

The compass of road were cut out in 32 quarters of winds (of 11,25° each) in order to simplify the reading, without to make it too vague. This makes it possible to use a simple expression to give the order to the quartermaster to inflect his road of a few " degrees; Lof fez (or arrive) of a quarter ! ".
