This song is one six minutes having the fragmented personality of the hero of the album, Jimmy. Its author, Pete Townshend, said on this subject:
The concept of quadrupling of the personality comes from an erroneous comprehension from the Schizophrénie. Jimmy is a suffering boy of schizophrenia, but when it takes pills, its schizophrenia divides and it suffers from quadrophénie.
Does this song start with the topic of Keith Moon ( has bloody lunatic, I' L even curry your bags ), connects on that of John Entwistle ( has romantic, is it me for has moment? ) and that of Roger Daltrey ( has tough Guy, year helpless dancer ) before finishing on that of Pete Townshend ( has beggar, hypocritical year, coils reign o' er me ). The four topics (see introduction of the principal article) which cross work are thus presented successively in this song. That is opposed to the penultimate track of the album, The Rock , where the topics are presented simultaneously. One can say that this morcau is a kind of opening, if one regards Quadrophenia as a Opéra-rock.
