Quadripoint

In Geography, a quadripoint is a point of the surface of the Earth which touches four distinct areas, i.e. where four Frontière S different meet.

Quadripoints international

Currently, there generally does not exist any quadripoint recognized between four different Pays, although it was constant that such a point exists in the Zambezi, in the West of the Chutes Victoria, between the Botswana, the Namibia, the Zambia and the Zimbabwe

There exist however several places where four frontier lines meet in a point, but these borders do not concern with each time two countries:

  • the commune Dutchwoman of Baarle-Nassau and the Belgian commune of Baerle-Duke have a territory split up, with many Enclave S. Among those, two of the Belgian enclaves in the Netherlands are touched in a point, thus creating a quadripoint between the two countries.
  • In a similar way, the Bangladesh and the India have many enclaves in the area of the Cooch Behar, and two of the Indian enclaves meet in a point.
  • the Austrian city of Jungholz is attached to the remainder of the country in a point and is entirely surrounded by the Germany.

The territorial claims on the the Antarctic are not recognized with the international level. If it were the case, the South pole would be the point of meeting of seven countries (Argentine, Australia, Chile, France, Norway, New Zealand and the United Kingdom), that is to say thus a heptapoint.

Tripoints close relations

In several places, two tripoints are very close one to the other and can give the impression - with a chart not having a sufficient scale - which a quadripoint exists:
    • the tripoints Kazakhstan - China - Russia () and Mongolia - China - Russia () are distant of approximately 40 km.
    • the borders between the Botswana, the Namibia, the Zambia and the Zimbabwe are not very well delimited; it does not seem to exist of quadripoints between these four countries (towards), but the tripoints are in any case very close.
    • the Lac Chad borders four countries, but there does not exist quadripoint inside the lake between the Cameroun, the Niger, the Nigeria and the Chad (towards)
    • In the Golfe of Aqaba, there does not exist quadripoint between the Saudi Arabia, the Egypt, Israel and the Jordan (towards).

Quadripoints histories

  • Between 1839 and 1919, the existence of the Moresnet created an international quadripoint between this country, the Germany, the Belgium and the Netherlands (). The annexation of Moresnet by Belgium after the First World War put an end to its existence.
  • Between 1922 and 1991, a quadripoint existed between the Saudi Arabia, the Iraq, the Kuwait and the neutral Zone Arabia Saudi-Iraq (), but the precise borders between the countries never were explicitly specified. It ceased existing with the disappearance of the neutral zone.

Quadripoints secondaries

If there does not exist quadripoint with the international level, it is possible to find some on the level of the subdivisions of one or more country (for example between four provinces, States, cantons, communes, etc).

Canada

With the Canada, the Four Corners are a point located at is probably a quadripoint between the provinces of the Manitoba and the Saskatchewan, and the territories of the North-western and the Nunavut. The legal definition of Nunavut seems to indicate that the creation of such a point was in the intention of the Parliament of Canada; it is not impossible however that the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan is not precisely located on the meridian line of Western 102° in the geodetic system WGS 84.

The United States

  • the Four Corners is the only point of the the United States where four States meet (the Arizona, the Colorado, the New Mexico and the Utah).
  • In Florida, the five counties of Glades, Hendry, Martin, Okeechobee and Palm Beach meets inside the Lac Okeechobee.

Finland

In Finland, the communes of Will have, Masku, Mynämäki, Nousiainen, Pöytyä, Turku, Vahto and Yläne meets in the National park of Kurjenrahka, forming a octopoint.

Philippines

  • Eight munipalities or provincial towns of Albay, with the Filipino , including the town of Legazpi meet inside the crater of the Mayon.
  • On the island of Mindanao, the four provinces of Bukidnon, Cotabato, Davao del Norte and Davao of On meets in a point (probably one of the three tops of the Mont Apo).

Saint-Christophe-and-Niévès

In the State of Saint-Christophe-and-Niévès:

Switzerland

In the Canton of Geneva, the Bridge Bochet mark the quadripoint between the communes of Choulex upstream and Vandoeuvres downstream on Right Bank and of Puplinge upstream and Thônex downstream on left bank.
