Qrio (“Quest for cuRIOsity”, Search of French curiosity, its old code name is the SDR-4XII for “Sony Dream Robot”) is a prototype of biped Robot of company humanoïde developed between 2003 and January 2006 by the Japanese company Sony. He is the successor of models SDR-3X and SDR-4X. Its slogan is “Makes life fun, makes you happy” (in French “the life Returns amusing, returns to you happy”).

Description

Capable of facial Voice recognition and , of Voice synthesis (including the song), this robot with the capacity to support a conversation with an human being (currently in English or Japanese). It is also possible for him to locate the objects in space thanks to its stereoscopic Vision, but also the sounds thanks to 7 integrated microphones. Its bipédie advanced, enables him to go on encumbered grounds or to variable slope and to climb. With this intention it makes sure that its Center of gravity remains in its zone of stability, which in addition enables him to react to external pressures (for example if it is pushed). By establishing a “mental” chart of its environment it can calculate the optimal way towards its destination by avoiding the obstacles. It is also equipped with a wireless connectivity. Lastly, a handle located in the back of the robot makes it possible to raise it, which causes to stop its operation.

If its functionalities are comparable with that of its competitor ASIMO, its more reduced size ensures a vaster stability and movements to him.

Although ever marketed the estimates of its cost varied between 25.000 and 40.000 euros.
