QIAGEN ( NASDAQ : QGEN, FWB: QIA) is a company which sells Kits of molecular biology. These products are intended for the preparation of sample in lookahead and the solutions of molecular diagnosis. Founded in 1984, QIAGEN N.V is now a company of holding Dutchwoman with operational center based with Hilden in Germany. Qiagen has subsidiary companies in 14 country and employs more than 1.700 people throughout the world.

QIAGEN is known for its intended products with the purification of DNA and ARN. In biotechnology and in biological sciences it is often necessary to purify specific molecules such as the nucleic acids (DNA and ARN), other cellular components. With the beginning of the year 1980, Metin Colpan, then doctorand, developed procedures advanced for the separation of the nucleic acids, which were much simpler and rapids to be used that the existing methods. The idea of Colpan was to put on the market its discovery starting from one only company and with two friends it founded QIAGEN, one of the first firms German of Biotechnology.

Today the company sells more than 500 products (called consumable) and of the automated solutions intended for a broad range of applications of research in the fields of the life sciences, including handling, the separation and the purification of proteins. QIAGEN also provides kits of diagnosis, tests for the human one and the veterinary field. For example, the company launched highly specific tests which allow effective and fast detection virus H5N1 of the avian flu.

The products are sold in more than 42 countries in the world on the market of the university research, pharmaceutical and biotechnological, but also of the laboratories of diagnostic. QIAGEN also provides techniques of purification standardized and tests on the market of the tests applied such as legal medicine, the biodéfense, food control, and it pharmaceutical process control.

QIAGEN is known in industry to have easy kits of employment which can replace the older and harder methods.

QIAGEN often refuses to reveal the chemical composition of its plugs, which is a disadvantage and certain researchers do not wish to include the name of QIAGEN in their scientific publications.
