Qaanaaq
Qaanaaq is a city and a municipality in the North-West of the Greenland. It is the only city and municipality of all the county of Avannaa ( Greenland of north ). It was built in the Fifties to rehouse Inuits of Thulé, exiled of force during the construction of an American military base on their ancestral grounds. The population of the east city of 640 inhabitants, the municipality counts of them 850 for a surface of 225 500 km ² (approximately half of that of the France). In addition to the town of Qaanaaq, the municipality is also composed of the following villages:
- Savissivik
- Moriusaq
- Qeqertat
- Qeqertarsuaq
- Siorapaluk
The military base of Thulé belongs neither to the municipality of Qaanaaq nor in Greenland. It remains the property of the American administration . The January 22nd 1968, a bomber B52 was damaged with ten kilometers of the base, in the Arctic Ocean. This one transported four nuclear bombs of which three were pulverized and one was never found.
Near Qaanaaq also one of most constructions of the world is, a 410 height meters mast being used for the radio communications.
