The Pyraustinae is largest of Crambidae. It gathers approximately two thousand S, the majority of the tropical areas but some can meet in the areas moderated as in Europe and North America. At least 40 species live with the the United Kingdom and more than 70 in the United States. Many species of Pyraustinae have larvae which live in the stems and the fruits of the plants. The Ostrinia account several species considered as ravageurs of the cultures (like the European corn borer).

The taxinomists do not agree on the place of Crambidae, some of them regarding as a subfamily of Pyralidae. In this case, the subfamily of Pyraustinae is regarded as a subfamily separated within Pyralidae.
