Pyramiden

Pyramiden (Russian Пирамида in ) is an old locality of the Svalbard, a Russian camping and a mining community located on the principal island of Spitzberg. Its name comes to him from a mountain in the shape of pyramid to the foot of which it was rested by Swedish in 1910. In 1926, Russian repurchased it, for in their turn selling it with the mining company Trust Artikugol in 1931. The community functioned in a completely autonomous way, and was managed like a vast company of almost 1.000 employees until the end of the years 1990. The stop of mining goes back to 1996. To forward coal to the port, a Funicular at summer built between the city and the mine, in height, with mountainside.

In 2000, the production of the mine ceased, the city with thus given up, only two guards occupy the city. It is part from now on of the long list of the phantom Ville S of the Spitzberg, like Grumantbyen, Colesbukta or Advent City.
