Pyracantha

Pyracantha , commonly called " burning bush " is a botanical kind of persistent and thorny bushes of the family of the Rosaceae, subfamily of the Maloideae. The word Pyracantha comes from the Greek Pyros , fire and Acantha , the spine. The name of Burning bush is an allusion to the biblical episode reported in Exodus 3,2.

Description

Pyracantha is originating in the south of the Europe and the Asia. It can reach 6 m in height. It is a close relative of the Cotoneaster , but Pyracantha have notched sheets coriaces from 2 to 4 cm length and large spines whereas the Cotoneaster does not have any.

They give, in end spring, white flowers in Corymbe (Mellifère S though malodorous) giving rise to knobs red, orange, or yellow wall in autumn.

Use

Pyracanthas are decorative Plantes, appreciated in the hedges and gardens for their flowers and their coloured Fruit S. Their very dense structure and their large spines make them very useful when one needs to create a insuperable Haie.

They are also a good refuge for the wild life of the garden, being able to be used of pantry and shelter with the birds, Cétoine S, Phasme S and being able to feed the Abeille S in Pollen.

Although they are very bitter, the fruits of Pyracantha are not toxic in spite of the popular belief; they are sometimes used to make Confiture.

Pyracantha can also be used like Porte-greffe for the Néflier of Japan.

Certain varieties are used in Bonsaï.

Culture

Pyracantha are shrubs with rather fast growth and easy of maintenance. They push as well in full sun as in the semi-shade. They like the humus-bearing grounds, drained well but is also satisfied very well with a calcareous ground.

They support the size but are sensitive to the bacterial Feu, the Tavelure and are appreciated Puceron S. It should be noted that the spines will become the branches of the following year.

Multiple Pyracantha easily by Sowing or Propagation by cutting at the end of the summer.
