The Pyla-sur-Mer is a Seaside resort located at the entry of the Bassin of Arcachon.
Two orthographies allowed and are used: " Pyla" or " Pilat"
Although this station belongs to the territory of the commune of Test-with-Buch, the Pyla-sur-Mer is the prolongation of the agglomeration of Arcachon, extending to the foot from the Dune from Pilat
It is made up of several districts:
The Pyla-sur-Mer is known for its the highest dune of Europe, its bench of Arguin and its ornithological reserve, its forest and its beaches océanes which extend to the south from the dune at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean towards Biscarrosse - Beach: small Nice, the Lagoon, Dirtied.
The creator of the station of the Pyla-on-sea is Daniel Meller, born in Bordeaux on May 14th, 1863 and deceased with Nice on April 29th, 1944. At the time of a transaction, it exchanges with the State 463 hectares of grounds bought for the occasion on the territory of the commune of Tests It and the banks of the Lac of Cazaux against a little more than 143 hectares of forest domanial extending from Moulleau to the dune from Sablonneys. This exchange, authorized by an order of the prefect of November 13rd, 1913, is carried out on April 4th, 1915.
The proximity of the large close maritime dune gives to Daniel Meller the idea with a name for the company which it can create. By somewhat modifying the commonly allowed Gascon orthography, Pilat , which can translated by " large tas" (of sand), it chooses that of the " Pyla" and as of on April 2nd, 1917, the schedule of conditions of the Real Civil society of the Pyla-sur-Mer is written and deposited. According to article 6, " the pines or other trees of high-stem could be shot down only on the site of constructions to build or the alleys with ouvrir" . This is at the origin of the characteristic of the Pyla-sur-Mer: " the city in the forêt".
In 1928 between concerned the second " créateur" , Louis Gaume, who creates in his turn a " Company of Pilat-Plage". The district of the " Pilat-Plage" will build itself in the prolongation of the " Pyla-on-Mer". In the sale contracts of grounds which he proposes, Louis Gaume asserts himself as exclusive builder. Quickly it builds increasingly neat villas, of a style largely inspired of certain local constructions and Pays Basque.
Economic conditions of time of war and its classification in " Interdite" zone; by the German Occupant stopped, of 1940 to 1944, all new construction. In certain places one had then to proceed to mineclearing operations. It is only from 1950 that the Company Louis Gaume obtains complete workshops of frame, joinery and central heating. His/her son Jacques Gaume (1920-2001) continues his work. Currently, Louis Gaume is the person in charge of the company. More than 4000 " Gaume" villas; are built.
Every three years a boat using the technique known as of the rainbow projects on the beaches of Pyla 150.000 m 3 of sand taken on the shallow waters. The cost for 2007 is of 450.000 €. These beaches are subjected to degradations continuations with the bad weather, the Marée S and the undertow of the ocean.
