Puy of Nugère

The puy of Nugère is one of the most important tops of the Chaîne of Puys.

It is not very high (994 m), whereas the surrounding plate is with nearly 800 m, but it very broad and complex because is made several encased cones due to the various eruptions. Its principal crater has close to 80m of depth.

It is famous for its castings of Lave (the Trachyandésite ): it is the Pierre de Volvic . This stone was used to build all the old private mansions of the town of Riom, the cathedral and the Préfecture of Clermont-Ferrand, and many buildings and castles of the surroundings. It was also used at the 19th century to carry out the flagstones of the pavements of the town of Paris.

At last century (19th century), the tables of orientation, the plates of streets, were in enamelled lava of Volvic, the old control panels Michelin also, (what appears logical considering the proximity of Clermont-Ferrand, seat of the factories Michelin ).

Nowadays, the plates of indication are metal, the tables of orientation out of material of synthesis, and the stone of Volvic is hardly used than to make monuments.

A survey carried out in one of run Volcan made it possible to reach to 60 m of depth the water of the old valley. This water is currently marketed under the name of water of Volvic. On the labels for this water, one saw the photograph of another famous Volcan of the Chaîne of Puys: the Pariou, it is not any more the case for problems of right to the image .
