Puumala

Puumala is a municipality center-is Finland, in the area of Savonie of the South and the province of Eastern Finland.

omnipresent lakes covering 35% of the total surface area, 3.000 km of banks, more than 1.000 islands, a situation privileged in the middle of the Saimaa, Puumala is one of the communes which incarnates best the area of the lakes. It is without surprise that it is also with its 3.200 houses of holidays one of the capitals of the Finnish summer.

The other side of the coin is a rather poor municipality, largely dependant on the exploitation of the Forêt, without true industrial base. She did not see her population growing only one year since 1950, and the starting rate/rhythm of the inhabitants would tend even to accelerate.

Even if the immense commune counts officially 43 villages, the borough of Puumala itself is the only significant center of population. It is built at the edge of a broad strait spanned by the viaduct of Saimaa, the 4th more important Pont of the country.

The close municipalities are Ristiina in south-west, Mikkeli in the west, Juva in the North-West, Sulkava in the North-East, and in Karelia of the South Ruokolahti in the south-east, to which one can add the communes of Taipalsaari to the south, Savitaipale and Suomenniemi in the south-west on other side of the lake Saimaa.
