Putumayo World Music is a label of music independent created in 1993 and based with New York.

In the beginning, Putumayo was a company which manufactured clothing. This company had been founded by daN Storper in 1975 and had been sold in 1997. The cofounder Michael Kraus united with daN to create the label Putumayo World Music.

Label

Part of the collected funds of the sales of CDs is transferred with association Cross-country race-Farming Putumayo Initiative. Since its creation, the label was made known for its compilations of merry and rythmées musics of the world.

This label is currently distributed in France by Harmonia Mundi.

Currently, one can find two collections, each one with their characteristic:

Putumayo Present

The albums distributed under this label are of an incredible diversity: Musics of the world, lounge, Salsa, samba, musics Turkish, Greek, West-Indian, etc

Putumayo Kids Present

These albums are addressed to the children more particularly, where generally the songs are multi-cultural and simple to sing. The titles of the albums often use the word " Playground" ( French Playground , African Playground ,…)
