Voir also Putsch of Algiers (homonymy), for the other putsch which was held in Algiers .

The November 8th 1942, the Allies unload in North Africa, in order to take with reverse the troops Rommel, and to involve the French possessions of this area in the war. The success of this operation was largely facilitated by the Coup d'etat of the resistance, which preceded by a few hours the unloading with Algiers, and by which 400 civil patriots directed by their reserve officers occupied the strategic points of Algiers and decree the generals of active Vichyist ( June, Darlan and others). As then the Vichyist forces, once left their inertia, devoted themselves to the reconquest of Algiers on the resistant ones (without arriving there besides completely), they could not go against the troops alliées.
Ainsi the putschists they managed to on the whole neutralize the XIXe Vichyist Army corps during 15 hours, during which the Allies could unload without opposition, to encircle the city, then to obtain the capitulation from it the evening even. Thus the resistant ones of Algiers allowed the immediate success of the unloading in North Africa (Opération Torch), whereas, in Oran as in Morocco, where the forces petainists could not have been neutralized, they violently fought, and held in failure, during several days, the forces liberators.
