The purification of the memory is a step taken within the framework of the Repentance of the Catholic church in the year 2000 in order to:
- be sorry for the errors made by the Church in the History (crusades, Albigensian Crusade, etc)
- to forgive.
This step belonged to the wishes of the Pape Jean-Paul II several years before the year 2000.

The purification of the memory was evoked by Jean-Paul II at the time the visit of courtesy to S.B. Christopoulos, Archbishop of Athens and all the Greece, on May 4th 2000.

Short historical background

October 31st 1992, the Pape Jean-Paul II paid once again homage to Galileo at the time of his Speech to the participants in the plenary session of the pontifical Académie of sciences.
