- to forgive.
This step belonged to the wishes of the Pape Jean-Paul II several years before the year 2000.

Short historical background
In
1632 and
1633 took place the lawsuit of Galileo, because of the publication of the
Dialog on the two great systems of the world (
Dialogo will sopra I due massimi sistemi LED mondo ), work openly procopernician, who enfreignait the interdict of the Inquisition on the works favorable to the Héliocentrisme (
1616). Galileo was condemned to died on June 22nd
1633, and its sorrow was immediately commuted to house arrest by
Urbain VIII.
At the 18th century, in front of the optical proof of the trajectory oritale of the ground, the Église recognized the value of work of Galée: the pope Benoît XIV made give the imprimatur to works Galileo in
1741, and raised the index on works having milked to the Héliocentrisme in
1757.
Last resistance arised in the years 1820: in
1820, the Settele canon was on the point of publishing elements of optics and astronomy. After a first refusal of the Anfossi father, the interjeta author near the pope Black and white VII which granted an favorable opinion in
1822.
After work of
Interpretation and
Hermeneutics launched by
Leon XIII and
Pie XII, the modern Pape S returned all homage to the exceptional talent of Galileo.
The Église recognizes its errors, and she considers that one cannot really speak about rehabilitation, since the institution which condemned Galileo does not exist any more. The liftings of index of 1741 and 1757 are implicitly rehabilitations.
Pie XII accommodated the theory of the Big bang by this expression: “FIAT lux! ”
Commission of study named by Jean-Paul II
November 10th
1979 (celebration of the hundredth birthday of the birth of
Albert Einstein), the pope
Jean-Paul II expressed the wish that “theologists, scientists and historians, animated by a spirit of sincere collaboration, look further into the examination of the case Galileo and, in a honest recognition of the wrongs on some side which they come, make disappear the distrust that this business still opposes, in many spirits, between science and faith. ”
Jean-Paul II named on July 3rd
1981 a “pontifical commission of study of the controversy ptolemeo-copernician to the XVIe 17th centuries”.
October 31st
1992, the Pape
Jean-Paul II paid once again homage to Galileo at the time of his Speech to the participants in the plenary session of the pontifical Académie of sciences.
Jean-Paul II clearly recognized the errors of some Théologien S of the 17th century in the business at the time of the setting to the index of the heliocentric writings
(
1616) and at the time of the judgment of Galileo (
1633):
- “Thus new science, with its methods and the freedom of research which it supposes, obliged the theologists to wonder about their own criteria of interpretation of the Writing. The majority did not know to do it.
- Paradoxically, Galileo, sincere believer, showed themselves more perspicacious on this point than its adversaries theologists. " If the writing cannot wander, he in Benedetto Castelli writes, some of its interpreters and commentators can it, and in several ways ". One knows also his letter with Christine of Lorraine (1615) which is like a small treaty of biblical Herméneutique . ”
- (extracted the speech of Jean-Paul II with the Academy ponrtificale of sciences on October 31st, 1992)
A first book of the cardinal
Poupard on the business Galileo is appeared in
1983.
A second book is appeared in October 2005.
