Puppets of information

the Puppets of information , in the beginning the Arenas of information , is a satirical emission of Marionnette S, chain of French Télévision Canal+, created by Alain de Greef in 1988 and still in production currently, of which the goal is the Caricature political world, media, personalities and more generally of the current world. It is daily diffused 19:58 with 20:07 in week, and a Compilation of the five emissions of the week is diffused Sunday towards 13:45 under the title the Week of the Puppets (idea suggested by Bruno Gaccio at the time of its arrival in March 1992). Each year, a video cassette or a DVD is published: the year of the Puppets , taking again the best moments of the passed season, and sometimes of the not diffused new sketches. From 1992 to 1997, there were two best off per annum.

The authors, using puppets of latex, have fun to caricature the media personalities of the spectacle, the policy, and the sport. The repetitive character of the Quotation S and the Stéréotype S of the puppets made it possible to make sometimes more popular the features of the caricature than the person itself. The political officials seldom criticized this emission of fear of appearing closed of spirit.

Gimmicks

History

1988, August 29th: Alain de Greef replaces the JTN Nuls by the Arenas of information . This emission makes during with the Bébête show of TF1. It “is coprésentée” by the puppets of Patrick Poivre d' Arvor (PPD), Anne Sinclair and of Christine Ockrent which clashes per same hour on the JT of TF1 and Antenne 2. When Christine Ockrent authenticates it leaves Antenne 2 in 1990, the tournament ceases and PPD remains alone with the orders.
1990 : the emission is renamed the Puppets of information .
1991 : the Guerre of the Gulf causes an surge of televiewers towards Canal+, wearied by the tv news of TF1, Antenne 2 and the Five.
1993 : the emission is seen decreeing two prices with the Seven of gold.
1995 : one reproaches the Guignols of information for having influenced the results of the presidential election because of the treatment too considered “sympathetic nerve” granted to the Guignol of Jacques Chirac, called “Chi” and transformed by the authors into anti-hero. The girl of Jacques Chirac, Claude Chirac would have even offered a video cassette of the Guignols to her father following her election.
1997 : the emission is seen decreeing a third price Seven of gold.
1998 : the Puppets make fun bad collectings of images with the OJ of winter of Nagano. The counterpart “here, in Nagano”, becomes worship.
2000, March 3rd: After 12 years of presence on PAF, the Puppets of Information announce the end of their emission. It was only one hoax, but 3,4 million people is in front of their small screen on Monday, March 6, 2000, in waiting of a confirmation.
2002 : the charge of influence on the result of the presidential election is repeated (several surveys affirm that the Puppets allowed more than 15% voters to make their choice). Chirac is called “Supermenteur”. At all events, the presidential one reactivates the media attention around the Puppets.
2002, April 21st: the Puppets of information announce that Jean-Marie Le Pen is present at the second tower of presidential, fifteen minutes before the standard time.

November 2004: a special decoration is set up to announce the result of the American elections.
2005, May 11th: the SCUMS puts in residence Canal+ after a lodged complaint by the bishops of France in connection with a sequence considered to be abusive for the new pope: this one gives its blessing in the name of the Father, of the Son and IIIe Reich . Benoît XVI is renamed Adolf II. The chain presented its excuses.
2007, January 8th: a new decoration is set up.
2007, January 12th: Bruno Gaccio announces that it will leave the puppets in June, after the presidential election.
2007, March 9th: The Puppets, carried out their second better audience since April 24th, 1995 (shortly after the first turn of the presidential election) with 3,6 million televiewers (14,8% of share of audience).
2007, May 6th: The Puppets devote their emission to the " pot of départ" of Jacques Chirac. They announce the results of the presidential election at 8 p.m., with, nevertheless, of the insinuations on the results, before 8 p.m.…

Controversies

The Puppets had often to justify their sketches.

As of their beginnings, a sketch puts in scene Francoise Sagan incentive to use tampons periodic, with, at the end, Béatrice Dalle carrying an enormous plug between the legs. Francoise Sagan complains with justice. The lawsuit relates to six points, and Canal+ loses on a half not, because of a sequence entitled Tuesday of François Sagan . In 1996, a naked sketch showing Raymond Barre causes a polemic. The consequences of this sketch give place to two sketches. In 1997, a disagreement opposes the Puppets and main Gilbert Collard, often brocardé. After judgment, Canal+ gave frank a symbolic system to Gilbert Collard.

It is not a question of course of the only examples of conflicts between the authors and the personalities which they caricature. However, in the majority of the cases, these litigations are solved without passing in front of the courts. In general, the result is a change in the way in which the person is caricatured.

Puppets

Alain Duverne designs the puppets. Their manufacture is expensive and comprises several stages: caricature drawn by Bruno Marty, sculpture of a model, creation of an associated mould, realization of the latex puppet, then painting and completions (hair, eyes…).

The team has a collection always growing of accessories, since various sizes of Gourdin S until the Bobsleigh.

Techniques of handling

At the time of the newspaper, PPD and its guests, who are behind the bank (or castellet), are handled by two marionnettists. One deals with the arms, the other deals of the mouth and the eyes using pump.

In the attic window (with the black bottom), the puppets are “upright” and they are also handled by two marionnettists, one dealing with arm and mouth, and the other of the eyes and other arm.

Sometimes, when there are many puppets, only one marionnettist who deals with arm and mouth.

Diffusion and realization

Time of the Arènes of Information (1988 - 1989) the emission was recorded and the texts were written up to three weeks in advance. It is only as from the second season (1989 - 1990) that it began a little the direct one. Indeed, the puppet of PPDA gave the titles on line.

Since, the emission is diffused on line and as a public of the Monday to Friday since the studios of the Plaine Saint-Denis, in the north of Paris. In the past included in the emission Nowhere Elsewhere , it cuts from now on the Large Newspaper of Michel Denisot.

Traditionally, during the Cannes festival the emission is carried out on line of Cannes in new decorations. This operation requires to move the team of the puppets but also of many puppets and accessories. One needs two semitrailers to transport all the puppets and the accessories. The emission is still carried out on line and in public.

Several known realizers follow one another it: Jean-Louis Cape Gift Kent, Renaud Van Kim or Pascal Duchêne.

The re-entry 2007 in HD

Since the re-entry 2007 of the Monday, September 3, the Puppets, just like the Large Newspaper, is diffused in 16/9 E even on channel MPEG-2 called in SD; the analogical VHF is letterboxée. That thus implied “a new” manner of tallying the broader image, and to have horizontal rails of the text-logos which become, by illusion of parallelism, relatively “longer”. A point that the salesmen of the HD will contradict, one will have seen practically of course the SD the black silhouettes of the marionnettists especially on the sketch of Rugby, probably because of the “new” luminous sensitivity of the cameras-HD, although the lighting of the plate did not change a priori.

For the ten years of the Puppets, a telefilm feature-length film was carried out: Puppets, the fiction , as well as documentary four hours (available in VHS at the time of a subscription to Canal Plus the year of the diffusion of documentary, in 1999)

Two video games were also published on the topic of the Puppets. In the first, Puppets… play! , it acts to leave to research of scoops by taking the role a journalist. The pawns are the latex characters of Edouard Balladur, Jacques Chirac, Antoine de Caunes and Philippe Gildas.

Other objects in any kind were create: sphere World Company, vinyl, plastic sculpture of the pawns of the board game, box of 35 cards on the characters most popular of the puppets, published at the time of the ten years of the puppets.

Three books were published:

the secret diary of Jacques Chirac . Deliver which recalls year 1993 of Jacques Chirac after the nomination of Edouard Balladur and reports his idleness in waiting of the election of 1995.
the electoral envelope , which contains all the posters of each candidate of the presidential election of 1995.
Putain of Puppets , delivers of 580 photographs, putting in scene 272 puppets, published at the time of the 18 years of the Puppets.

the Puppets took as a starting point Spitting Image which existed in the United Kingdom, which took as a starting point themselves the Bébête show of TF1, which itself derived from the Muppet Show .
