At the Dipterous Insect S , the pupe is the intermediate stage between the state of Larve (called Asticot) and that of Imago, during the metamorphosis. It is equivalent at the stage of nymph or Chrysalide at the Lépidoptères. However, should be noted an important difference: if the chrysalis or the nymph is formed after a driven nymphale supplements, the pupe is formed during a process including/understanding all the stages of the moult, except the exuviation: indeed, the pupaison is carried out inside the cuticule last larval stage, which is not rejected, but which hardens and becomes a cocoon sheltering the whole of the transformations of the metamorphosis. Before the exuviation of the adult, three cuticules are thus encased in the pupe: outside, old the cuticule larval, hardened; in lower part, the cuticule pupale itself, very fine; and, below still, the pre-exuviale cuticule of the imago in formation.
The stages of growth by successive moults of a fly are thus:
egg → generally 3 larval stages (Maggot) → pupe → Fly.
Sometimes one speaks about pupe for the ants, sometimes qualified also d'" œuf" wrongly, but it is acted in fact (in the traditional French terminology) of a nymph. That calls the following remark:
Attention with the problems of terminology with the foreign languages: pupa in English (but also Puppe in German etc…) indicate indifferently the pupes the dipterous ones and the nymphs of the others holométaboles, while nymph indicates in English the larval stages of the insects hémimétaboles. In addition, the english-speaking usually indicate by blossoming the exit of the pupe by the adult (for us it is the adult exuviation or the emergence of the imago), whereas the term blossoming is used in French to indicate the exit of egg (but the english-speaking use for that the term hatching ). It would undoubtedly be interesting to know which with anteriority on the etymological level, but it is probable that the French terminology will be abused more and more under the pressure of the other languages…
