Puolanka
Puolanka is a municipality the North-East of the Finland, in the area of the Kainuu. The commune was born in 1867 from a scission with current the Hyrynsalmi.
Geography
Puolanka is one of these gigantic communes of the north and the east of Finland. It is exactly of the surface of the Luxembourg. It is very typical of Kainuu, glaze of wooded hills and small lakes, becoming marshier in the North-West.One finds there shovel-mixes:
- the highest water fall of Finland, Hepoköngas (24 meters).
- a narrow canyon in which snow persists until the middle of the summer ( Pirunkirkko , the church of the devil).
- a small station of ski ( Paljakka )
- a hut in which Elias Lönnrot would have slept in 1827.
- the source of the river Kiiminkijoki.
- the geographical barycentre of metropolitan Finland ( Manner-Suomi , Finland without the islands of Åland).
The municipality is bordered by the following areas and communes:
- Area of Ostrobotnie of North, municipalities of Utajärvi in the west and Pudasjärvi in north.
- On the side of Kainuu, Suomussalmi in the North-East, Hyrynsalmi in the east, Ristijärvi in south-east, Paltamo in the south and Vaala in south-west.
