The Punk rock'n'roll is a rather nebulous musical sub-genus, composed of several groups having in commun runs their rhythmic very fast near to the punk one, although sonorities of the punk rock'n'roll are less heavy and the less ironic words. One often finds simple and accrocheuses melodies.
However, the punk rock'n'roll does not have musical personality nor of limit well defined and the majority of the groups presented below are sometimes regarded as pertaining to another kind. It is not rare to either meet artists of which entirety of
discography is not regarded as punk rock'n'roll. It is the case for example of Green Day or Sum 41.
Musical characteristics
On the instrumental level, the vast majority of the punk groups rock'n'roll use only the battery to impose a very fast tempo on their music, the guitar being used to amplify the melody, generally short and aggressive.
The voice of the singer can sometimes appear youthful, like that of
Tom Delonge (ex-
Blink-182) or that of Pierre Bouvier, the singer of
Simple plan. The accents are sometimes nasty piece of work, to see rough as for
Billy Talent.
Image
The general public often summarizes the idea of the punk rock'n'roll to the image of the “skater”,
Vans and board with the feet, tee-shirt
Volcom on the shoulders, and hair in faded peaks. This vision is illustrated perfectly by April lavigne in its title
Sk8er Boi , extracted from its first album,
Let Go (2002).
This label however does not correspond to all the groups.
The Offspring and
Green Day for example adopts a more adult philosophy, with sometimes committed texts politically (
Wake Me Up When September Ends and
American Idiot of Green Day or Jennifer lost the war of the Offspring).
Undergone influences
At the border of various more famous or recognized kinds, the punk rock'n'roll gathers artists with the marked identity and the varied influences.
Groups such
Blink-182 or Five Days Off assert clearly their filiation with the
Punk.
Blink-182 was divided besides into two groups:
+44, always belonging to the punk universe rock'n'roll and
Angels And Airwaves, being brought closer to the aéro-rock'n'roll. One can also quote Rise Against, a group
Straight Edge, whose certain songs as
Paper Wings are perfect examples of the punk rock'n'roll. Others undergo the infuence of the
Hard rock, like
Billy Talent and
Thrice, whose sonorities often make think of monuments like
Finger Eleven or
Nickelback. Lastly, certain pieces of
Good Charlotte somewhat point out the pop, and
Yellowcard integrates a violin (classical music).
Business successes
Two categories should here be distinguished:
Commercial logic
It acts artists having deviated little by little towards a marketing attitude, like
Simple plan,
Avril Lavigne or
Sum 41 (the singer of Sum 41,
Deryck Whibley, and Avril Lavigne are married besides) who meet an immense success near the young teenagers thanks to involving melodies, of the almost infantile voices and the simplistic texts, near to worries of the préadolescents.
It is the case of the song
I' m just has kid Simple plan:
I' m just has kid, and life has nightmare
Nobody cares, 'causes I' m alone in the world
or more recently the tube Girlfriend of Avril Lavigne.
These groups are completely repudiated by the mediums known as “underground”. The last albums of Avril Lavigne and Sum 41,
The Best Damn Thing and
Underclass Hero were taxed besides with pop, or “Bubble-Gum rock'n'roll”.
