Punk garage

The punk garage is a sub-genus of the Punk rock'n'roll which mixes the Garage rock'n'roll with which it is closely dependant, and the punk one.

Precursors

The precursors are the groups MC5 and The Stooges respectively formed in 1964 and 1967, with Détroit. The first album live Kick out the Jam of MC5 left in 1969 mixes for the first time the energy of punk with a very anchored music rock' roll. The same year leaves the album éponyme Stooges which puts a notch at the top level power and mark the first steps of the punk one.

The groups which marked the style in its modern design the most are The New York Dolls (1971-1975) and The Cramps (1975).

  • The New York Dolls is the first group to have a qualifiable sound of punk garage. Their compositions are simple and square but turn like old standards rock' roll. With regard to the imagery, the New York Dolls are disguised and exploit with dimensions “a sex” of second zone, which will switch the style towards a kind of couldn't-give-a-damn attitude which is clean for him.
  • The Cramps is composed of the members Lux Interior, Poison Ivy, Bryan Gregory and Palm Balam. They then regard as a group of rock' roll, but their interest for B films, the sex and drug, will associate them with the incipient punk culture.
