History
Qualified Pugetum Tenearum in medieval Latin, the city is seen alternatively called lo puget of tapeworms in local dialect and poggetto in Italian, before being fixed under the Puget-Théniers current form. The strategic position on the passage of the VAr was going durably to install Puget-Théniers in the middle of armed confrontations between the Royaume of France and the Empire. The Peste did not save either this rural city, which lost a third of its population at the time of the first wave of “ died noire ” at the 14th century.
The viguery of Puget-Théniers belonged to the county of Provence until the dédition of 1388, by which the left bank of the valley was put under the protection of the Count de Savoie. Puget-Théniers was then pledged to the powerful Jean Grimaldi, baron de Beuil and to instigator of the transfer of suzerainty. This branch of the Maison of Grimaldi lost Puget-Théniers following the one of its many rebellions against the House of Savoy.
Consequently Puget-Théniers became field of the House of Savoy before being high with the row of county for the inféoder with the count Nicolas Grimaldi. A descendant of the branch of the Grimaldi d' Antibes, Nicolas Grimaldi, accepted the nomination of Puget-Théniers of the hands of the duke Victor Amédée of Savoy in 1704. These Grimaldi de Puget, formerly prolific with the Piedmont, resident today in France and Belgium.
Puget-Théniers, like the majority of the County of Nice, was a hearth antirévolutionnaire until the Restauration, which restores the king de Sardaigne in his rights. The many changes of borders through the ages deeply influenced Puget-Théniers and the valley of the VAr, as well in the plan of the identity, as with that of the administration.
The latest to date, in 1860, was carried out by Napoleon III in compensation of its intervention in the war of independence of Italy. It was durably to attach Puget-Théniers to France. In spite of an initial resistance of the authorities, the industrial revolution and its railroad also penetrated the valley. Thirty years later, the “ train of Pignes ” a new prosperity brought.
Puget-Théniers was a sub-prefecture of the the Alpes-Maritimes of 1860 to 1927. It was then one of the least populated sub-prefectures France. Since, if its administrative importance somewhat decreased, Puget-Théniers remains a rather active shopping mall.
