General information on Albator and its universe
Vision of the future of Leiji Matsumoto
The history of Albator proceeds at the end of. Humanity, strong of 50 billion inhabitants, colonized the worlds neighborhood and uses their resources. The Earth is controlled by a single and democratic government, directed by weak and inefficient a Prime Minister. Matsumoto depicts a company which has neither dreams any more nor ambitions as well as a humanity repue and idler. The arrival of an external threat worries neither the population nor the government. For example, land the Prime Minister does not want to in no case to stop his part of golf whereas it receives alarming reports/ratios. The only ones which escapes this ambient torpor are some scientists and, of course, Albator and its crew.
Major topics
The whole of works reporting the history of Albator is rather vast and draft of a great number of subjects. One can however underline certain recurrent themes.
continuation of an ideal
That it is noble (the search of Albator for freedom, a world of peace and of friendship) or not (the thirst for being able of a Mr Zon), the characters in the search of an ideal are emphasized. On the contrary, those which act only by immediate interest or idleness (the Prime Minister, the director of the orphanage of Stellie) are not entitled to any kindness.
the conquest of big spaces
In the series Albator , there are many references concerning the conquests carried out by humanity. Technical conquests, like the conquest of the air with, for example, the vessel of Esmeraldas in the shape of airship, or the references to the ancestors of Albator stealing on Biplane S of the years 1930 - 1940; conquest of the World and big spaces with this environment Far-west on many planets. This type of anachronism belongs to the charm of Albator and contributes to make of it an ode with the thirst for research and discovered which made progress humanity.
nostalgia
The general atmosphere of Albator is dark with pessimistic description of a future distance, but also by the melancholy of the characters. All the friends of Albator knew tragedies, the loss of a close relation, the exile, the destruction of their native world. All share a feeling of nostalgia for a Lost Paradise. The French credits, as well as the throbbing background musics, added by Eric Charden on the French version of Albator 78, contribute to this at the same time futuristic, mysterious and plaintive poetry.
piracy
Piracy is in the center of Albator , not by its behavior, few plunderings to which it book are raised more of the practices of a Robin of Wood than of true a Pirate, but rather by the chivalrous and libertarian aspect of the mythical Pirate S. It is this aspect of piracy, free food no matter what it costs some, associated with a direction with the strict honor and the individual responsibility of the members of the crew of the Atlantis , make a true pirate vessel of it.
In margin of piracy itself, it there with the apparent fascination of the author for what milked with the marine , and with the naval action. Boats of all the times appear during the series, or inspire by the forms for the spaceships.
