The price Goncourt is a Literary prize French, rewarding the authors for French language (not inevitably of French nationality), created by the will of Edmond de Goncourt in 1896. The Literary Société of Goncourt is officially founded in 1902 and the first Goncourt price will be decreed the December 21st 1903.
The Goncourt prize, created to reward each year “the best work for imagination in prose, appeared in the year” is awarded almost exclusively to a Romance . It is the French price most prestigious. The price itself is symbolic system - ten euros - but the notoriety promised to the prize winner, who will see his work reaching the prize list of the best sales, is a very coveted reward. The ten members of the Académie Goncourt meet each first Tuesday of the month in their living room, on the first floor of the restaurant Drouant, Gaillon place, in the second district with Paris. The price is allotted at the beginning of November. So after fourteen ballots there is no prize winner elected the president has a double voice to determine a majority of vote.
The price can be decreed only once with the same writer. With an exception near: the literary imposture of Romain Gary which received it in 1956 for its novel the Roots of the sky , then in 1975, under the pseudonym of Emile Ajar, for the novel Life in front of oneself .
In 1988 was created the Prix Goncourt of the high-school pupils.
Note: the Goncourt price is indissociable, since 1926, of the Prix Renaudot, created this year by ten literary criticisms which awaited the proclamation made by the president of the Goncourt Academy. Without being organically related to the jury of Goncourt, the jury of Renaudot plays the part of his natural complement, accentuated by the advertisement of the result, simultaneously and within the same framework.
Note: polemic on the editors Gallimard and Grasset often present.
